Manuela Adreani talks to her characters

Talented Manuela Adreani is not just a wonderful fellow illustrator. She is joining us on our journey to help us create beautiful books.

We love her for that.

Manuela is also a beautiful human being. And we really love her for that!

Welcome to RED Paper Kite, Manuela, and thank you for the beautiful drawing!

Tell us about you...

Describe your personality in 5 words

Shy, sensitive, creative, dreamy and caring.

What inspired you to become an illustrator?

I’ve always loved drawing. I actually did not realise it could be a profession until I attended an open day at the illustration school in Rome. I studied there for 3 years. And then I came across Lisbeth Zwerger's books and I fell in love with her illustrations. I love children’s books in general and I felt that children's illustration was what I wanted to do. Although it took me long time to take the courage to do it, I’m glad I finally did it!

Where do you live?

I’m so lucky to live in the city center of Turin. It's a small city but very lively; I don’t need a car to get around and there are many parks where I can go walking, many museums, cinemas. Most weekend are filled with events around the city center, one of my favourite is Flor, when the streets turn into a beautifully blooming garden.

What is your work about at RED paper Kite?

I create books. Having the possibility to work on the book's graphic design is a great opportunity for me because I can marry fonts and design with illustrations - or at list I hope I succeed on this mission! I believe that choosing the right fonts for an illustrated book is as important as the illustrations. I'm also happy to share this adventure with Sandra van Doorn {the founder} who is a sensitive illustrator and cares about the quality of the books she wants to publish!

You have illustrated numerous picture books. What is your favorite children’s book character?

It’s difficult to choose just one character, I adore them all - but surprisingly for me Peter Pan is truly close to my heart. I love Peter Pan and every character in that book!

If Peter Pan walked through the door right now what would you do?

Well, if I could see Peter Pan I would ask him to take to the island that doesn’t exist! :-)

Red Paper Kite’s team is a tiny bunch of creative people from everywhere.

Tell us what you like about… not sharing an office.

I think it is incredible to connect with people I haven't met in person - it’s quite magical. We share the same passion, purpose and aim - it all happens so naturally.

If you were a new colour in a paint box, what would it be?

I love a blueish green. Or greenish blue... I would be a warm blue that exudes peace.

Can you share a secret tip about your work as an illustrator?

My secret is talking to the characters - while you are drawing them! :-)

Thank you Manuela!
